Here is the call for participants for Nisimazine Cannes 2012! This will already be our 7th year covering this legendary cinema event taking place on the French Riviera!

NisiMasa are currently looking for:
– 6 young film critics;
– 2 photographers;
– 1 graphic designer.

Candidates should be citizens and/or residents of Estonia, France and Turkey!

Selected applicants will be invited to attend one week of the Cannes Film Festival in order to form an international editorial team motivated to make innovative and fresh festival coverage. As always, it will be a unique opportunity to gain practical, hands on experience in film journalism and meet colleagues from different countries.

The team will create a 96-page e-book covering the Camera d’Or Competition (open to 1st feature films only) and the shorts of the festival!

About Nisimazine Workshops

NISI MASA has 7 years of experience in publishing a free daily gazette during the Cannes Film Festival. The magazine is made in the frame of a film journalism workshop for young aspiring film journalists.

Nisimazine film journalism workshops have taken place during many international film festivals since the first edition in Cannes in 2006, notably: Torino Film Festival (Italy), DocPoint Helsinki (Finland), Alba Intl Film Festival (Italy), Cannes Film Festival (France), Iran Intl Documentary Film Festival (Tehran), Festival on Wheels (Turkey), IDFA – Intl Documentary Festival Amsterdam (Netherlands), Festival de Lima (Peru), Festival do Rio (Brazil), Abu Dhabi Film Festival (United Arab Emirates), Tallinn Black Nights (Estonia).

Since 2006 over 150 young critics from all over the world have benefited from developing their skills in a stimulating international environment.

Nisimazine Cannes 2012 Workshop

The Magazine

Nisimazine Cannes will be published online and spread through a network of thousands of contacts in the cinema industry. The gazette will have the format of our ‘Nisimazine Special’ editions, and will contain film reviews, interviews, thematic articles, news, pictures from the festival, etc. Coverage will be extended on the website with extra articles, picture galleries and a blog.

Editorial Team

The editorial team will be headed by staff who have been running the magazine together
for many years and all over the world:
– Director of Publication – Matthieu Darras
– Graphic Designer/Editor – Maartje Alders
– Project Manager – Giovanni Vimercati

Participants will also have the opportunity to work on a daily basis with renowned journalists from the field, to discuss their articles and photographs one on one. Attending journalists for this year will be (amongst others): Paolo Bertolin (Italy) film critic & correspondent of Venice Film Festival, Jay Weissberg (USA) Variety.

The Schedule

As of the announcement of selected participants, the essential preparation period will begin. Participants will be required to begin researching, making interviews, taking part in online meetings to brainstorm the magazine’s content, and of course writing the first articles!

Application Guidelines

The final application deadline for candidates is the 10th of March 2012 at midnight. All
application material must be sent via email to

Candidates must be aged between 18 and 30 on the 15th of May 2012, and citizens and/or resident of Estonia, France or Turkey.

Filling in the application form is a prerequisite. Applicants should choose either to apply as film critic, photographer, or graphic designer.
Providing evidence of previous works is compulsory for all positions.

– Journalists: 3 articles originally written in or translated into English
– Photographers: a set of 10 photographs
– Graphic designer: CV, a portfolio and one example of a magazine/page design.

One passport-style photo is also required with each application (this is needed for your accreditation).

By filling in the application form, candidates confirm their availability to attend the entire duration of the workshop, and their motivation to actively take part in necessary preparation meetings and activities in advance. There will be mandatory Skype chat meetings (dates to be confirmed).

Participation Rules

Participants will come to Cannes in 2 teams:
– one team for the first week (Tuesday 15th to Monday 21st of May 2012);
– another team for the second week (Monday 21st to Monday 28th of May 2012).

Each team will consist of 3 writers and 1 photographer. The graphic designer will join the
team for the second week.

Accommodation will be provided for the week of the festival the participant is invited for. Participants will be sharing an apartment with the editorial staff.

Food costs will be on charge of the participants (possibility to cook in the apartment kitchen). 50% of travel costs will be reimbursed upon presentation of the travel documents.

There is a participation fee of 165 Euros. Participants who are not listed members of a national NISI MASA association will be asked to pay an additional registration fee of 35 Euros. The fee will have to be paid to NISI MASA before 31st of March 2012.

If, for any reason, a participant is unable to attend the workshop, they must inform the organisers immediately. Participation fee will not be refunded.

Participants will be asked to bring their own necessary equipment (e.g. laptop, camera, video camera). If this is not possible, please inform us in your application form so that we can make necessary arrangements.
