Two Shorts Made the Final Cut

It always feels good to participate in something just for the fun of it. The same thing happened when our friend Ed at FILMSshort asked us to co-judge and give a prize for the best European film in their competition. Being hardcore short film lovers we were glad to do so hoping that the filmmakers will also have fun and win some kudos as well. The finalists were chosen by the audience and the judges chose the overall winner from the top four.

There were a lot of discussions and the judges found it hard to decide, though they finally agreed on the best short. Congratulations as overall winner go to Alexandra Torterotot for The Stairway.

The winner is screened on the FILMSshort homepage and will remain on the FILMSshort website as long as the winner wants it to! The Stairway (L’Escalier) is a simple and nightmarish story of a man who cannot escape a never-ending but always changing series of stairways.

We, at Daazo.com also chose our winner. The award of the Best European Short Film goes to LXIV by Damian Livesey. This film is gets the the bonus of being promoted on Daazo.com as well. LXIV (64 in Roman numerals – see if you can work out why!) is a beautifully shot montage, and pieces together a dazzling array of shots that condense our existence into a 2 minute film.

Congratulations to the winners! Thanks to everyone who entered and voted!

May Day 2011 Competition on FILMSshort

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

Our friends at FILMSshort asked us to co-judge and give a prize for the best European film  in their competition. We were glad to do so. Here is a little check-up on what happened so far.

As the first step filmmakers were invited to email a Daazo link on May 2nd 2011. The films were meant to be recent, between 2-5 minutes and in English or subtitled. Then 8 films were selected and posted on their Facebook page in the form of 4 ’semi-finals’ where films were paired together for voting. This was done to make it as fair as possible. Then the most ‘liked’ films from the semi-finals were put on Films Short’s site for final judging. Here we are now. The judges will choose the overall winner from the top four. The winner will appear on the FILMSshort homepage and will remain on the FILMSshort website as long as the winner wants it to! The best European short film will have the bonus of being promoted on Daazo.com as well.

Here are the finalists:

Wrong Game, by Maunel Succi, is a thougt-provoking look at the problem of child soldiers, especially in Africa. Manuel is an Italian fimmaker based in London. He is a graduate of Video Design from the Instituto Europeo di Design in Rome.

LXIV (64 in Roman numerals – see if you can work out why!) is dedicated to Damien’s father, Jack, who died in 2009. A beautifully shot montage, it was his final year film from Staffordshire University, England, and pieces together a dazzling array of shots that condense our existence into a 2 minute film.

The Stairway (L’Escalier) is a simple and nightmarish story of a man who cannot escape a never-ending but always changing series of stairways. Alexandra Torterotot is a French filmmaker based in New York although The Stairway was shot in her native Paris. When not making short films, Alexandra works as a script supervisor and is also putting together a feature.

Mondays, a simple, warm and at times funny story, was initially envisaged for the reed.co.uk film competition. Glenn is an independent filmmaker and composer from Liverpool. He has had short films screened at varoius showcases in the UK and is making more short films as well as corporate videos.

We will keep you up to date and announce the winners next week. In the meantime watch the films, and comment to help us decide which film should get the best European film award and the extra promotion on Daazo.com!

The Film Competition Organised by TEDxDanubia and Budapest Film hold on Daazo.com has ended, the winner of the Audience Prize is announced

Daazo.com was happy to participate in a short film competition again. Budapest Film and TEDxDanubia invited entries for their film contest entitled “The Power of Imagination”. All films had to be maximum of two minutes long and connected somehow to the core topic of the conference. Eight pieces of the very best were made public on the online platform of Daazo.com and an audience poll was open for voting. Check out all the competitors on daazo.com/tedxdanubia!

The film that collected most of the votes and therefore won the Audience Prize was “A tükör előtt” directed by Krisztián Heisz. It’s a witty short about man’s fight with his reflection in the mirror. Watch the winner piece by clicking here! At present it’s only in Hungarian, but we will provide the English subtitles soonish.

As a prize the winner can take part free of charge in the TEDxDanubia conference hold on 25th March. Furthermore the winning short film is going to be showcased as supporting film in the cinemas before the feature films distributed by Budapest Film for a whole month. Congratulations to the creators of the winning short film!

We, here at Daazo.com, constantly work on the organisation of new contests and we aim to serve as a stepping stone for young filmmakers. With this single annuncement a young filmmaker got the opportunity to have his film screened in cinemas. We are glad to be a part of this success story.

For those who missed this prize there are still plenty of possibilities. Submit your film on Daazo.com and check out our blog and Facebook page for new competitions and opportunities from the short film world!

20th FILMFESTIVAL COTTBUS – competition films and jury members

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

On the occasion of the anniversary edition of the 20th FilmFestival Cottbus, this year’s feature film competition will include ten German premieres. Among them are new discoveries alongside productions that have already enthused audiences in Cannes, Locarno, Karlovy Vary and elsewhere. They will compete for the first prize, which is endowed for the first time with 20,000 euros. The short film competition features eleven contributions from nine nations, including one world premiere and several international and German premieres.

For this year’s International Festival Jury they were able to win the Brazilian filmmaker Sandra Kogut, the Indian director Shahant Shah, as well as Fernanda Silva, director of the FESTROIA film festival Setúbal, board member of CICAE (Confédération Internationale des Cinémas D´Art et D´Essay) and member of the European Film Academy. Further jury members are the German actress Anjorka Strechel and the Serbian director Vladimir Perišic, whose debut film “Ordinary People” won the prize for the best film and the best actor in Cottbus in 2009.

The members of the Short Film Competition Jury this year are the Israeli filmmaker and director of the Sam Spiegel Film & Television School, Renen Schorr, actor and producer Arben Zharku, as well as Lenka Tyrpáková, member of the selection committee of the Film Festival Karlovy Vary and also responsible for the programme of the Short Film Festival Prague.

There is a wide variety of themes for spectators to discover in the Feature Film Competition: from a weird cat-lover to the departure from childhood, the search for a new and better life, and the dream of more light in the Kirghiz steppe. The styles used range from breathtaking close-ups to black-and-white landscapes.

Young Piroska risks setting off to a new life in ADRIENN PAL. This year’s FIPRESCI award-winner in Cannes immerses in the world of the overweight nurse who takes care of the dead in a hospital and suppresses  her loneliness by eating. One day she starts searching for her childhood friend and for happier days. Ali, the shepherd in EIN ANDERER HIMMEL (ANOTHER SKY), and his son wind up in Moscow – also hoping for a better life. Looking for the woman who abandoned them years ago, they turn into hounded souls who never arrive. Matilda, the day release prisoner in the Romanian debut OUTBOUND, is also dreaming of a new start. She has 24 hours to reorder her life, but the past catches up with her. The film is based on a story by Cristian Mungiu, the director of 4 MONATE, 3 WOCHEN UND 2 TAGE (4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS).

One of the most impressive Russian debuts this year is RÜCKWÄRTSGANG (REVERSE MOTION), directed by
Andrey Stempkovsky. Based on the story of a mother  and her missing son, the film tentatively relates the societal impact of war, which permeates families like a cancerous growth. It additionally addresses the situation of guest workers in the CIS, a problem also taken up by the second Russian competition film, EIN ANDERER HIMMEL (ANOTHER SKY). One can also discover many things in common in the Serbian productions TILVA ROŠ and WHITE, WHITE WORLD. Both have chosen the mining town of Bor as the location for their entirely different stories. The Estonian director Veiko Öunpuu surprises the viewer in terms of style with his first full-length feature film. In DIE VERSUCHUNG DES HL. TONY (THE TEMPTATION OF ST TONY), he tells of a bizarre journey to the depths of the soul using breathtaking black-and-white landscape images and a lot of black humour.

In this year’s Short Film Competition, cinematic highlights from Hungary, Poland, Russia, Estonia, and other countries await the audience. The themes range from the first love to the departure from home or a talisman that brings no luck. Among the German premieres is the Romanian contribution by the dffb graduate Alexandru Mavrodineanu. MUSIK IM BLUT (MUSIC IN BLOOD) is about a musical test with an unexpected outcome. The film won the Best Film Award in Grenoble. The Russian production MEER DER WÜNSCHE by the Georgian director Shota Gamisonia will celebrate its world premiere in Cottbus. In 27 minutes, the film narrates the longing of two friends for the sea in the style of Beckett with a Russian touch.

‘Boxed’ Won the Daazo Competition at Miskolc

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Dániel Villányi’s film, ‘Boxed’ won the first Cinefest Daazo Competition. The young film maker got a brand new Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 software. We hope that with the help of this software he would edit many good films , which we can watch on Daazo.

The festival was a roaring success in Miskolc again, with many good concerts, parties, not saying that the festival presented films from some of the most talented filmmakers under 35 from around the world. This year  the festival screened films from 46 different countries. We are very proud that we could sponsor Cinefest and we could organise an online competition together.
